Sustainable Entrepreneurship. Or is it?

This master's programme takes a critical yet holistic approach to the intersection of sustainability and entrepreneurship. It is designed to equip students with the mindset and skills needed to question, challenge, and ultimately transform existing societal and business paradigms.

We believe that the future is co-created. That’s why the programme brings together students from diverse academic backgrounds and uses interdisciplinary teaching methods that combine academic rigour with real-world relevance.

Students will explore the systemic nature of today’s social, environmental, and economic sustainability challenges. They will analyse how entrepreneurship can both contribute to and help solve these complex issues.

Upon graduation, students are prepared to engage professionally in the Finnish and global entrepreneurial ecosystems. They do so as changemakers, innovators, and critical thinkers.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Building the next generation of sustainable leaders. A generation committed to creating both social and environmental impact while driving economic prosperity.

Today’s complex challenges demand expertise, dedication, and heart. The Master’s Programme in Sustainable Entrepreneurship responds to this need by preparing future leaders who are ready to rethink how business is done. These are individuals who care deeply about people and the planet, but who also understand the importance of financial sustainability.

The business world is shifting toward a more holistic view of entrepreneurship, one that focuses on creating real value for society. Professionals who can guide this transition and develop sustainable solutions across corporate, public, and startup sectors are increasingly in demand. This makes sustainable entrepreneurship not only a meaningful path, but also a powerful career opportunity to make a lasting difference.

Life as a Master’s Student

Vu Trang
student
From the very first course, Foundations of Entrepreneurship, we were introduced to organisations like Aaltoes, Kiuas, and the Aalto Ventures Program. We met real entrepreneurs who gave guest lectures, attended events, and offered direct insights into the startup world. These early connections gave us immediate access to the people and networks that matter, which is such a valuable part of the learning experience.

I love the Otaniemi campus, especially as an international student. Everything is in one place, it’s just the university and the students. You really feel like you’re in this bubble with all these people around you. In other cities I’ve visited, student life feels more scattered and disconnected, but here at Aalto it’s different. People see each other and talk to each other all the time.

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS

Foundations of Entrepreneurship

This course introduces students to key concepts, theories, and debates in entrepreneurship. It encourages critical reflection on what entrepreneurship is, who entrepreneurs are, and what roles entrepreneurship plays in society. Students will explore different perspectives and build their own understanding of entrepreneurial thinking and action.

Entrepreneurial Financing

Students will gain a practical and theoretical understanding of how entrepreneurial ventures are funded. Topics include startup financing, venture capital, crowdfunding, financial forecasting, and investor relations. The course prepares students to navigate the financial challenges and opportunities faced by early-stage ventures.

Market Entry Strategies

This course helps students analyse two major challenges faced by entrepreneurial businesses entering new markets: understanding the competitive landscape and developing effective positioning strategies. It combines strategic theory with hands-on tools to support smart and sustainable market entry decisions.

Social Innovation

Social innovation refers to the creation of social value through novel approaches. This course explores how it is practiced by a wide range of actors, including social enterprises, companies, the public sector, and grassroots initiatives. Students will examine how innovation can address complex social issues in diverse organisational contexts.

Entrepreneurial Futures

Using a problem-based and iterative learning approach, this course explores how entrepreneurial thinking and tools can be applied to large-scale societal challenges. Students will consider whether entrepreneurship, as a socio-economic phenomenon, can contribute to shaping more sustainable and equitable futures.

Entrepreneurship Lab

This hands-on course offers students the chance to experience what it’s like to build and test a startup idea. Without needing to form a company, students will work in teams to explore opportunity recognition, user-centred design, business ethics, pitching, startup finance, marketing, and sustainability.
